Using and Mixing Metals in Design

Using metals in interior design adds interest, texture and a bit of shine to a room. At the Las Vegas Market show this month, antique brass and “vintage” gold finishes featured prominently in furniture, lighting, and wall decor. This brass is a toned-down antiqued or brushed version from the ubiquitous shiny metal of the 1980’s. The softer tone of the today’s brass adds real warmth and a subtle richness to space. Using a few brass accents along with other metal finishes is a great way to add flair and interest.

The brass in this space adds a touch of sophistication to the formal living room without overwhelming the soft palette. Your eye bounces around the room to catch the little bit of bling.

Similarly, in this kitchen, the brass hardware is so subtle and gives the room interest and softens the sleek stainless steel lines of the other materials. The pendant lighting has a beautiful gold interior that casts a warm glow in the room…gorgeous day or night!

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to introduce brass or gold into a room and the options are limitless, ranging from a small table lamp to a “statement” piece.

An easy way to get started on mixing metals is with a picture frame or an accent table. Here are a few more examples of how mixed metals can add interest and character to a room.
